…possible discounts for jan - mar weddings…

…hi folks,

happy new year!

every year at this time, the period between january thru march is great for booking out my year, but there are not too many weddings that happen during that time. so, in order to try and fill in some of those weekend dates, i would like to potentially offer a small discount. if you are having a wedding in jan, feb or march of this year (can you believe it’s 2010?), shoot me an email and we’ll see what we can work out. if it’s a small simple wedding, maybe i can give you a small discount for that. i’d like to fill in as many dates as possible, so please feel free to get in touch and we’ll see what we can do.

have a great day…

…amanda & cory…

…amanda & cory tied the knot on the beach in carlsbad, ca . it was a beautiful wedding and a beautiful day.

i met cory many years ago when we first got our dogs. he owned a dog sitting business and took our dogs to dog park a few days a week. later on, his then girlfriend, amanda, babysat our children on those rare nights where mom and dad got a night out. the two of them decided to move away to mammoth, ca and snowboard. i guess they liked snowboarding better than surfing. ;) it was sad to see them go, but cory sold his business to someone who has since become our good friend.

i was honored when cory called me up to ask if i would photograph his wedding.

here are some of my favorites from their wedding day…

let us tell your story

My Workflow…

This post is primarily for other photographers that read this blog. I have a lot of visits here, and many are photographers. So, an associate of mine had this idea that we should all post our workflow. In case you don’t know, the workflow a photographer uses to create their work is probably more important than the shooting because it’s where all the time is spent. I used to spend endless hours working on this stuff. But, over the years I’ve refined my process into a well-oiled machine. The idea is to spend only the absolute minimum amount of time behind the computer but to also mazimize the results. If you went unchecked, you could spend weeks editing a wedding. Some people tell me they take up to 80 hours to edit a wedding. I used to be like that. But, it’s unnecessary. You just have to think hard about the steps you are taking and understand why you are doing things the way you are. Below is the process I use. Every photographer is different in how they work, the tools and software they use and how they approach things. Anyway, the idea is to share on our blogs and maybe we can learn something from each other. Here’s my workflow in a nut shell. The only thing is, this doesn’t include albums and print orders and other things like that. This is just the weekly routine of processing a wedding.

Workflow

  • Download cards into a folder called “Download/<Wedding Date B&G Name>”
  • Make a duplicate copy on two external harddrives.
  • Make another duplicate copy on a 3rd hardrive via software called Second Copy. This is done while sleeping.
  • Open PhotoMechanic and select all the keepers. I just select #1 and that turns the keepers green. This process is very fast. Maybe an hour tops.
  • Create a folder called Delete and put all the non-selected images in that folder. These are mainly blurry, blinky images and just really bad ones. Yes, professional photographers do take bad shots. It’s just that we take more good ones than non-pro photographers.
  • Open Lightroom and import the folder of selected images
  • Go to work on the images. I try to do them all in one sitting. This takes a few hours, it just depends on how many images and how much work is required. If I shot well, and little correction is needed (which is usually the case), this can be pretty fast.
  • Export jpegs (level 80) into a folder called “jpegs”.
  • Upload the jpegs to the client online gallery
  • Blog it!
  • Burn jpegs to client DVD.
  • Copy completed folder to 2 external HD’s, and delete previous back up on same HD’s. All finished work is now on these HD’s.
  • Also, make duplicates of the finished jpegs onto 2 other separate external drives. I know have 4 copies of the finished work.
  • Delete the folder from the main drive.

This entire process consumes about a full 8 hour day from beginning to end. But, often while things are importing, or while I’m waiting for the cards to download, or whatever, I start doing other things, so it can take up to a week or so. But, the work is probably about 8 hours of real time sitting at the computer doing things. If we include an album, that’s a completely different thing and adds many, many hours to the process. Probably at least 80 hours or more.

I hope someone learns something from this.

Cheers,

Jerry

Torie & Justin

The wedding season has officially begun for me and Torie and Justin was the perfect wedding to start with. The weather forcast early in the week was calling for rain, but fortunately, the weatherman was wrong (no surprise there). We started out at the DoubleTree Hotel in San Pedro for the bride and groom prep. The wedding was held at the Japanese Gardens at CSULB. I love this place, not only because CSULB is my alma mater, but because it’s such a beautiful place to get married. Then afterward, the reception was back at the DoubleTree. Here are a few photos from Justin & Torie’s Wedding.

Torie sang “At Last” to Justin and just blew the place away. It was supposed to be their first dance song, but she decided to sing it instead. She should probably go try out for American Idol or something. Torie can SING!

Congrats to Torie & Justin. They are on their Honeymoon in Mexico right now! I hope they are having an awesome time, despite missing their flight out due to the time change. :(

…free wedding photography contest…

…the submissions are rolling in like a mad dog. when i first decided to do this, i thought it would be something fun to do. but, some of the stories i am reading are just breaking my heart. it’s not fun anymore. it’s going to be incredibly difficult to choose just one person. i’m humbled, and heart-broken that i can’t do them all. however, i will suck it up and do my best to determine the most deserving. please keep the stories coming in.

if you are reading this for the first time, i am offering free wedding photography for one lucky couple in 2009. you can read more about it here: http://www.frazierphotography.com/blog/weddings/free-wedding-photography-contest/. this has also been published by msnbc. yeah, it’s kind of a big deal.

…interesting factiods, but only to me, probably, about your potential future wedding date…

…fwiw, i thought this was a little entertaining. (yes, this is how wedding photographers entertain themselves :)

christmas was on my mind, since it just passed, and the thought of 20/20 came to mind, for whatever reason, which lead to 12/20, which lead to 12/20 2012. i thought, how cool. then my mind started racing through all the dates where that was possible. so, here they are, in case you were wondering…

9/20 2009 is a sunday. and i am currently available. YAY

9/9/09 is a wednesday. booooo!

10/20 2010 is a wednesday. boooo!

10/10/10 is a sunday. yay!

11/20 2011 is a sunday. yay!

11/11/11 is a friday. yay!

12/20 2012 is a thursday. i guess that’s a maybe. i get a thursday wedding once in a while.

12/12/12 wednesday. boooo!

so, that’s it in a nut shell. my mind is now completely spent and i need a nap.

i hope this was somewhat helpful for your future wedding planning.

cheers.
